Sometimes I get a call..."Hey! Wouldn't it be cool if we did it in 3D!?!" Well yes!! Of course it would be cool to do it in 3D! Clients want cool, I want cool but are clients always willing to pay for cool? Do they understand the the extra difficulty and time required for 3D? Do they really understand that planning, organising and just plain getting arses in gear are going to be far more important right from the off? Generally the answer is... no. But I want cool so "Yeah!" lets go.
This was a conference opener for ABG that turned into a bit of a mission getting sign off as the project went up the decision chain. The main issue was that the client just couldn't buy in until they saw the final render and the wanted to make changes which is time consuming and expensive as I was using a render farm. I did away with the need for Global illumination by subtly adjusting the shadow and AO passes and carefully placing fill lights around the place to replicate that when it mattered most. Experience will tell you that the thing that gets the most amends tends to be the text content, so thats all composited on in AE in post.
