Documentary Reel
I love working in the Documentary space for the challenge of working in a longer native format and its collaborative nature.
I've been lucky enough in recent years to have worked on some awesome projects with amazing teams.
Here is some examples of recent Documentary work.
Connections
Connections is an iconic science history series, which first aired in 1978. It was one of the most influential documentary series of all time. Four decades on, BiggerBangs revival was inspired by the challenges we face today.
This is one of the most challenging and rewarding projects I've been lucky enough to work on and I'm really proud of the work we managed to achieve. In the end we produced around 280 mins of VFX across 6, hour long episodes.
A significant part of my work was developing "procedural" processes in AfterEffects that would allow the whole team to create consistent complex "MindSpace" sequences across the whole series.
Just great to be part of the Lead VFX Team.
Air Warriors
I've been responsible for all the VFX and Graphics over the last 2 seasons of this Smithsonian Channel stalwart and it's been real fun developing and guiding the evolution of the visuals over the last 16 episodes.
Created using purchased models that are adapted and developed in Blender to suit the narrative and then animated and rendered directly in After Effects using Video Co-pilot's Element3D, which allows a flexibility and nimbleness that is essential when working to such tight deadlines on continuously evolving edits and stories.
Searching for Secrets
I really loved the Project with BiggerBank for Smithsonian. We had a great VFX Team, who were an absolute joy to work with every day. Lots of challenges lots of awards... Well an RTS nomination for the VFX and compositing.
In this case we weren't after a real Hollywood style composite as we were going for a more stylised almost 2.5 (2.75)D feel as this would have been impossible for the budget and the time scale but it gave us a great deal of creative freedom to achieve these results.
The general process was to use the pre-shot footage composed on to images and textures from textures.com and Pexels.com.
Conspiracies Decoded
Starting out as "Crimes and Conspiracies" this show was broadcast as "Conspiracies Decoded" with the Discovery Channel. Produced by BiggerBang, I was responsible for all the VFX across all 10 episodes.
Designed and animated in After Effects using Element3D to deal with the any 3D models.
